The idea of extension suddenly arises during a stay in Bruges. Before my eyes, a carnival procession is about to parade along one of the city’s canals. Instinctively, I begin taking sequential photos, with the idea of creating a panorama. I think of eliminating the empty spaces between the frames by slightly rewinding the film (we’re still in the analog field) between shots. During the subsequent development of the film, I found confirmation of my intuition, the desired effect through image continuity is achieved surprisingly.”

I realized that when you see a person for the first time, it’s as if you instinctively scan them from head to toe with your gaze. So I wanted to bring this sensation of sequential glance into photography. When you look at a canonical portrait, you’re struck by a particular part of the image and then you look inside to seek other information.

Extension, on the other hand, leads to the action of scanning the subject portrayed from top to bottom, and vice versa. It extends the time of vision instead of allowing instantaneousness.
